The government has announced changes that will affect your energy bills from 1 April. We know this comes at a time when you are continuing to face a rise in the cost of living. That’s why we want you to know that we’ve still got your back.

We want to help you through the upcoming changes. This guide provides answers to what is changing and how it will affect you, as well as a wide range of resources and support that we have available to help you manage your energy bills.

What’s changing on 1 April?

  • Energy Bills Support Scheme (EBSS). The government’s £400 Energy Bills Support Scheme (EBSS) will come to an end on 31 March 2023. So, from 1 April you will no longer receive the £66 or £67 discount on your energy bills each month. Learn more about the EBSS.
  • Energy Price Guarantee (EPG). The government’s Energy Price Guarantee (EPG) will remain at the current level of £2,500 from 1 April, for 3 months, instead of a proposed rise to £3,000. However, because the EBSS is ending, you’ll still be paying a little more overall for your energy from 1 April 2023. Find out more about the Energy Price Guarantee.
  • Price cap. The price cap is set by the energy regulator Ofgem, and is the maximum price per unit your energy supplier can charge you. It’s changing on 1 April - for customers on standard variable tariffs, standing charges will increase slightly and unit rates will decrease. However, the reduction in the Energy Price Guarantee discount means that overall, you’ll pay more for your energy. Read more about the price cap.
