E.ON Next are helping customers who want to shift their energy use and get involved in the National Grid’s Demand Flexibility Service. It's an opportunity to be rewarded for reducing energy use during peak time events.

We have been busy behind the scenes working with the National Grid to make taking part as easy as possible through a personalised experience for our customers. Taking part will help customers to reduce their bills and be paid for using less energy at certain peak times. It’s a great way to reduce energy, carbon and bills. ​​​​​​​If you’re an E.ON Next customer we’ll contact you if you are eligible to take part – so keep an eye on your inbox. To be eligible you'll need a smart meter that automatically sends half hourly readings, so we can calculate your daily electricity use, and have given us 'marketing consent' so that we can contact you.

How does it work?

The National Grid will run events asking customers to reduce their electricity use during a set time.

Participating customers will be given a personal target based on their average daily energy use. All customers who successfully reduce their electricity use to hit their personal target will receive credit to their E.ON Next account.

Customers can take part in as many (or as few) events as they suit.

Once you join, there are four simple steps:

  1. You will get an alert the day before each event.
  2. Confirm you are taking part.
  3. Use less energy during the event to meet your personal target.
  4. Save money on your bill and earn credit.


Since November 2022 E.ON Next customers have taken part in five Demand Flexibility Service events from the National Grid so far. They’ve managed to save over 78MWh of electricity which is the equivalent of 184 years worth of powering a 50w TV.

We’ve paid out around £350k to customers who saved energy and met their reduction targets. On average those who met their targets saved 0.58kWh. Added together E.ON Next customers saved enough electricity to power an EV around the world 13 times!

Who can take part?

To get involved you will need a smart meter that automatically sends half hourly readings, so we can calculate your daily electricity use. If you want to get a smart meter to take part or switch your current smart meter to half-hourly reading then find out how on our smart meter page. You'll also need to give us 'marketing consent' so that we can contact you about the scheme, which you can do in your E.ON Next customer profile on our website.

​​​​​​​If you’re an E.ON Next customer we’ll contact you if you are eligible to take part – so keep an eye on your inbox. Shifting your energy use with the Demand Flexibility Service is a great opportunity to earn rewards for saving energy to lower your bills this winter.

You will not be able to join if you have a Capacity Market contract or take part in any balancing mechanisms. Customers can only sign up to one supplier to take part in the National Grid's Demand Flexibility Service.

Ideas to reduce energy use.

Hitting your goal is simpler than you might think. There are lots of ways you can reduce your energy use during an event.

Try shaking up your daily routine a little by changing when you use your most energy intensive appliances. For example, you could put your dishwasher on overnight or have your hot meal at lunchtime. This is a great opportunity to try out new ways to plan your day.

Find energy efficient alternatives for your current activities. Most of us do the majority of our cooking in the oven or on the hob. However, it is far more energy efficient to use a microwave or air fryer to heat your meal. Try switching out the big screen TV for your tablet or smartphone for an hour or two - it takes less energy to charge your device than to power your TV. Plus, there will be no more fighting for the remote.

Make the most of some distraction free time and try going unplugged for a few hours. Switch out screen time for a book or a comic, try out a delicious new heat-free recipe, or spend some quality time together getting crafty or playing a board game. Before you get too carried away though, just make sure you are still powering your home essentials.

Finally, remember you can always go out. Businesses will still be using their usual energy, so you can cut down on your electricity by using theirs. If you are planning a meal out or a trip to the cinema try to schedule during an event. Or even simply use the time to walk your dog and run your errands.

There are lots more ways you can save energy during DFS events, so get creative and you’ll smash your targets in no time.

Demand Flexibility Service.

The Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) is a project being run by the National Grid Electricity Supply Operators (ESO) that is available to energy suppliers. We have opted to take part to help our customers to get involved and save energy and money.

The aim of the DFS is to reduce energy use at peak times to make the grid greener this winter. Lowering peak time energy usage will make use of more off-peak renewable energy, lower peak time energy prices, and avoid using back-up coal generators that are heavily polluting.
