As an E.ON Next customer you might have heard the buzz around COP26 when it was held right here in the UK. But the work didn’t end there. November 2022 will see COP27 kick off in Egypt to continue building toward a better future through a healthier planet.
What is COP27?
COP27 is the 27th annual Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
So what does that actually mean? COP27 is a gathering of influential people from around the world. From climate scientists and environmental activists, to business CEOs and world leaders. They are coming together to discuss the one thing we all have in common – our planet.
What's on the agenda this year?
The focus of COP27 is taking action and delivering real results on the aims set out in COP26. This year’s conference hopes to turn the past promises and goals into practical projects that will make visible progress toward a climate solution.
By emphasising international collaboration the hope is to make plans as a global community working together toward a shared future. These plans are both ambitious and achievable. A recognition that there are big changes that must start now, but also of the potential to make incredible progress working together with the skill and determination of team Earth.
What were the outcomes of COP26?
COP26 was focused on delivering the Glasgow Climate Pact. A commitment to four key goals that COP27 will continue to build upon:
Mitigation. This means moving towards being carbon net zero globally by reversing deforestation and switching to renewable energy solutions such as electric vehicles.
Adaptation. This means making sure that all countries (but in particular developing countries) are prepared to deal with the increasing challenges of climate change, such as extreme weather.
Finance. This means committing more funds to help the global community to deliver on their climate goals – especially by developed countries. Plus, stopping financial support for the fossil fuel industry.
Collaboration. This means effectively working together by uniting efforts so that knowledge, funding, and technology can be shared efficiently.
COP26 also recommitted to the Paris Agreement. This is the international treaty limiting global warming to a rise of under 2°C compared to the pre-industrial era.
When is COP27?
The conference will be held from 6 to 18 November 2022.
Where will COP27 be held?
This year the conference will take place at the Sharm El-Sheikh International Convention Centre (SHICC) in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
